Climatic areas

The climate of Basilicata is basically rigid and humid, of a continental type. In the coastal areas it is mild, with a Mediterranean character.
There are four main climatic areas:

  • Ionic plain of Metaponto with mild and rainy winters and hot, dry and well ventilated summers.
  • Tyrrhenian coast with a climate similar to that of the Ionian area, but with a slightly higher temperature in winter and cooler and more humid in summer.
  • Apennine mountains with very cold winters and persistent snow until late spring; with moderately hot summers, very cool at night.
  • Materana hill with hot, dry summers, characterized by high daily temperature ranges and foggy, cold and, at times, even snowy winters.

Rainfall

The average annual rainfall in Basilicata is 619 mm. There are also four main areas for rainfall values:

  • Tyrrhenian side: average rainfall of 1000mm / year
  • Apennine areas: average rainfall over 1000mm / year, mainly snowy in winter
  • Eastern slopes: average rainfall of 600-700mm / year
  • Metaponto area and Ionian coast: average rainfall 500mm / year
