Extract in English of the interview with Prof. Antonio Moschetta,
guest of Monica Di Loreto in the episode of the television series “My Doctor” (TV2001)
on April 27, 2015. Title of the program:
“Come curare il fegato grasso” (How to cure fatty liver).
The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. It regulates the “energy statement” that derives from the diet and the health situation, selects the ‘fuel’ that is needed for the functioning of the body and, in its purifying filter function, eliminates what is not needed. Lately, science starts from the idea that the liver and intestine are actually a single organ: the intestine absorbs and sends messages to the liver and the liver sends back to the intestine what is not needed. In short, science is giving us a lot of news and we are finally understanding more and more deeply what are the problems that arise from the misuse of one of these organs.
“Fatty liver” (or “hepatic steatosis”) means that droplets of lipid, droplets of fat, precipitate inside the liver, which unfortunately can lead to diseases for a very large number of people. Until recently it was thought to be harmless. In reality, prevention and screening procedures are put in place today to avoid this fatty liver. It should be considered as a traffic light, a message that the organism gives. even before serious diseases develop, to tell us that our health is at risk and that it is time to ‘go back’.
I state that when we talk about fatty liver we must exclude the “alcoholic fatty liver”, that is, the one induced by alcohol abuse.
The most important risk factors of “fatty liver” are therefore:
– visceral obesity, that which manifests itself with an increase in the circumference of the abdomen; today we talk about it more and more, because a few centimeters are enough to be able to suspect the presence of “fatty liver” and the risk of its complications;
– incorrect nutrition
– hypercholesterolemia
– hypertriglyceridemia
– type 2 diabetes; the type 2 diabetic is not the subject who has 200 blood sugar levels or who needs insulin; you are type 2 diabetic if you have a baseline blood glucose above 126 or sugar intolerance with blood glucose above 104.
For too long, medicine has neglected these risk factors. They are actually important signals, which taken in time can trigger strategies to ensure good health.
Medicines should be taken when they are needed and in the right quantities. Without making terrorism, I would like to say that, by maintaining a good state of health and reducing abdominal obesity, the use of drugs would be greatly reduced and the liver purification activity would also be improved. Most drugs pass through the liver, and a liver that is struggling with too much fat and too many drugs is clearly like a car that is constantly going at 4000 rpm. The liver can’t handle this for long …
What the doctor sees is the result of an analysis. Symptom is what the patient tells. There are no specific symptoms for fatty liver. This is why we talk about prevention. To screen, the doctor must intercept the patient who does not know he is. Fatty liver does not give symptoms and eventually would give them in the phase of its complications. It is therefore necessary to intercept the “fatty liver” patient before symptoms occur.
