Apulia / From the 16th to the 19th century

In the 16th century
Apulia experienced a flourishing of trade (due to the influence of Venice and Genoa) but also suffered assaults by Turks and pirates. The invasion of Otranto by the Turks, who slaughtered 800 people who had refused to convert to Islam, dates back to 1480.

From the 16th century until the unification of Italy (1861) Apulia underwent the domination of the Habsburgs and the Bourbons of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies; from 1806 to 1815, for a short period, also the Napoleonic one.
